Yurt Party

The New Zealand jazz band Yurt Party crafts original instrumental pieces. These are infused with influences from jazz, Latin rhythms, and Eastern European traditions. In 2023, the band recorded their debut album, featuring Ricardo Stuani as a percussionist. University of Canterbury Concert

In this multi-percussion solo concert, Ricardo Stuani performed three groundbreaking graphic scores. He played 27’10.554 for a Percussionist (1956) by John Cage. He also performed Blirium C9 (1965) by Gilberto Mendes and Wireless Telegraph (1984) by Ivan Zagni.

This repertoire offered a unique perspective on the evolution of graphic scores over three decades. It highlighted their transformative role in contemporary music.

The performance occurred on 18th October 2021. It was part of the New Music Central series. The University of Canterbury School of Music hosted it. The event took place in the University of Canterbury Arts City Location Recital Room, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Pub Choir

“Music witch” Astrid Jorgensen creates and hosts Pub Choir. It is an improvised show. It combines comedy, music, and a spirited lesson in harmony. The event transforms a crowd of lively strangers into a euphoric choir in just one night.

On November 5, 2024, Ricardo Stuani played as the percussionist in this unforgettable concert at the Christchurch Town Hall.

Tumbao

Tumbao is a Latin band led by Eduardo Conejeros, Omar Domingues and Ricardo Stuani. Tumbao is known for their high-energy performances. They captivate audiences with a dynamic mix of Cha Cha, Bossa Nova, Samba, Cumbia, Bolero, Son Cubano, and more. Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, the band brings the rhythm and soul of Latin music to life.

University of Canterbury Gamelan Ensemble

The University of Canterbury Gamelan ensemble allows students to study the rich musical traditions of the Indonesian Gamelan orchestra. It also provides them with the opportunity to perform. This immersive program fosters an appreciation for the intricate rhythms and melodies of this unique art form.

Ricardo Stuani collaborated with the ensemble during a concert held at Tūranga Library on 22nd May 2019. He contributed his expertise to this celebration of Indonesian culture and music.

Waiata ki te wai – Songs for Water

This concert was part of Yo-Yo Ma’s international Bach Project. It aimed to celebrate the importance of Canterbury’s rivers and waterways. The event took place on 13th November 2019, blending music and environmental awareness in a powerful cultural statement.

Beats Moda

Beats Moda is an instrumental music duo founded by Ricardo Stuani (percussion) and Tom Harris (keyboards and electronics). The duo focuses on crafting original compositions. They blend influences from jazz, Latin music, and electronic sounds. This results in a vibrant and innovative musical experience.

Beats Moda regularly performs in Christchurch. The band has become a dynamic presence in the local music scene. They captivate audiences with their unique fusion of rhythms and styles.

Mundi

Mundi is a vibrant ensemble dedicated to creating original music inspired by jazz, Latin, and African traditions. Ricardo Stuani has been an integral member of the group since 2019.

Mundi has regularly performed across New Zealand, enriching the local music scene. In 2022 and 2025, the group embarked on a nationwide tour. This tour was organised in collaboration with Arts On Tour NZ, which further cemented their impact on New Zealand’s cultural landscape.

Performed at the University of Canterbury, Music Performance program. The piece draws on Indian musical traditions and integrates Brazilian percussion through the use of the pandeiro, Brazil’s most traditional percussion instrument, creating a rich intercultural rhythmic dialogue.

Re-Percussion 2019

Ricardo Stuani collaborated in the performance of Ionisation by Edgard Varèse, a seminal piece in 20th-century percussion music. The concert marked the 35th anniversary of the percussion ensemble Pandemonium, celebrating their enduring contribution to the percussion community in NZ.

On May 21st, 2019, Ricardo Stuani performed with the HKH Quartet jazz concert. The event was held at The Piano, a premier music venue in Christchurch.

UC Percussion Ensemble: Bill Hammond – Playing the Drums Exhibit

The University of Canterbury Percussion Ensemble performed in celebration of the exhibition Bill Hammond: Playing the Drums. This unique event invited audiences to experience the wild and imaginative sounds of this talented and exploratory collective.

In a 90-minute program, the Ensemble presented a diverse array of composed pieces. These pieces were performed at various locations throughout the gallery’s ground floor. With numerous musicians and a plethora of instruments, the performance transformed the space into a dynamic and immersive musical landscape.

PERCEX
