Bloco de Carnaval Ōtautahi – organised through Gap Filler sponsored by Fletcher Living
Fostering unity among diverse groups is a formidable task, especially when striving for equitable access and active engagement. Language and cultural differences often create barriers that prevent communities from coming together. However, the Ōtautahi Bloco de Carnaval stands as a powerful testament to the potential of inclusivity to unite people from varied backgrounds. Through this initiative, the New Zealand community has embraced and celebrated Brazilian culture, offering educational workshops that inspire and encourage meaningful participation.
At the heart of this endeavour is a strong commitment to education, which serves as its foundation and highlights the value of learning and cooperation. The workshops were thoughtfully designed to reflect the vibrant spirit of carnival culture, incorporating dynamic drumming, elaborate costumes, captivating adornments, instrument-making, and even the creation of a large puppet. These immersive experiences are intended to spark curiosity and foster community exchange, allowing participants to build deeper connections.
By engaging in the workshops before the main event, participants begin a journey toward bridging cultural gaps—especially for those who may not have had previous exposure to diverse traditions. The workshops act as a bridge, connecting people and nurturing a richer appreciation of one another’s heritage.
In total, two main events and seventeen workshops were delivered, each carried out with a strong commitment to sustainability. This guiding principle shaped every stage of planning and implementation, ensuring a conscious and responsible approach throughout.
