How can cultural practice become an ongoing platform for community participation, intercultural exchange and social connection rather than a series of isolated performances?
Approach
Artecture co-developed Tupinikeen Samba Club as a community-led initiative that uses Brazilian samba to create accessible opportunities for learning, participation and cultural exchange. Through regular rehearsals, workshops, public performances and community events, the project welcomes people of all backgrounds to experience Afro-Brazilian traditions while building relationships through collective music-making.
Outcome
Tupinikeen has become an ongoing community initiative that strengthens social connection, celebrates cultural diversity and creates welcoming pathways for participation regardless of musical experience. The project has contributed to Christchurch’s cultural life while fostering intercultural understanding and a stronger sense of belonging among participants.
