Bloco de Carnaval Ōtautahi

Bloco de Carnaval Ōtautahi – organised through Gap Filler sponsored by Fletcher Living

Fostering unity among diverse groups is a formidable task, especially when striving for equitable access and active engagement. Language and cultural disparities frequently erect formidable barriers that hinder communities from converging. However, the Ōtautahi Bloco de Carnaval is a compelling testament to the potential of inclusivity to bring together individuals from varied backgrounds. Through this initiative, the New Zealand community has embraced and celebrated Brazilian culture, orchestrating educational workshops that inspire and cultivate robust participation.

At the heart of this endeavour lies a commitment to education, serving as its foundational cornerstone and emphasising the intrinsic value of learning and cooperation. The workshops have been thoughtfully curated to embody the vibrant essence of carnival culture, seamlessly weaving in dynamic drum beats, elaborate attire, captivating adornments, the crafting of musical instruments, and even the creation of a colossal puppet. These immersive experiences are meticulously designed to ignite a passion for learning and communal exchange, empowering participants to forge deeper connections in their interactions.

By immersing themselves in the workshops before the main event, participants embark on a journey to bridge the chasm of cultural understanding, particularly for those who may not have had the privilege of firsthand exposure to diverse cultures. The workshops are a bridge, connecting people and fostering an enriched appreciation for one another’s heritage.

A total of two main events and seventeen workshops were conducted, each meticulously executed with a steadfast commitment to sustainability. The guiding principle throughout was a resolute dedication to a fully sustainable approach, encompassing every facet of planning and implementation.
