The ‘Letter Drawing Project’ blossomed as a collaborative endeavor, sparked by my admiration for the captivating network of The Letter Drawing Project
The Letter Drawing Project is a creative exchange that invites children to imagine each other’s worlds through play, letters, and drawings. It began in 2015, inspired by art teacher Andreza Teixeira’s network of young artists and my encounters with children during a biking journey across Southeast Asia. From Cambodian villages to indigenous communities in the Amazon Rainforest, I saw how imagination and play connect children across cultures.
In Christchurch, New Zealand, the project came to life through a partnership with Ao Tawhiti students and the Christchurch South City Library. Brazilian children sent letters and drawings sharing how they see life in New Zealand and Australia, while local kids responded with their own visions of Brazil. Through this simple yet powerful exchange, children reimagined each other’s streets, games, and daily lives, discovering both differences and surprising similarities.
The project culminated in an exhibition at South Library in September 2023, showcasing this cross-cultural dialogue. More than an art display, it celebrated how children use creativity to bridge distances, fostering empathy, curiosity, and a shared sense of play.
